Obituary of Jakob Goerz

Goerz, Jakob - It is with a great sense of loss that we announce the passing of Jakob (Jake) Goerz into the arms of his Saviour. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret of 59 years; his children, Mary (Gerald ) Regier , Cathy (David) Boyce and Jim (Shelley); his grandchildren, Torin, Lucas, Lauren and Nicholas; his brother Hans and his sister, Hilda (John) Willms, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Aganetha Goerz and brothers, Nicholas and Peter. Jake was born in Chortiza , Ukraine, October 6th, 1934. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 15 with his mother, his brother Hans and sister Hilda, eventually settling in Virgil where he spent the rest of his life. He had a long career as a steam fitter working throughout the Niagara region. Jake enjoyed every aspect of life. He enjoyed volleyball, hockey, windsurfing, biking, long walks, and especially times at the cottage. He loved music, singing and being with his family. Jake was a member of the Niagara United Mennonite Church for 65 years and was an enthusiastic and faithful member of the choir until recent years. He leaves behind many great and long- time friends and will be missed by all. The family will receive friends and family at the Niagara United Mennonite Church, Niagara Stone Rd. on Monday June 27, 2016 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. A celebration of Jake’s life will be held on Tuesday June 28th at 10:30am at Niagara United Mennonite Church, followed by an interment at the Niagara Lake Shore Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment in the auditorium of the Niagara United Mennonite Church. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).
