Obituary of Ada May Smith

Ada May Smith

December 24, 1933 – January 26, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of May Smith (nee. Skanes) announce her passing.  She died peacefully at Linhaven Home for the Aged in St Catharine’s, Ontario on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021 at the age of 87.

May was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1933.  She studied Commercial and held many secretarial positions including working with the CBC, RBC and the Children’s Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s.

May is survived by her husband of 62 years, Rex Smith and their daughters, Lora Smith (Christian Gagné) in Montreal and Diane Jamieson (Douglas Jamieson) in Toronto, and several grand children (Laura, Victoria, Sidney, Keira and Olivia).  May was one of 11 siblings and is survived by her sisters, Marie (Late Ralph Green), Ottawa and Gwen (Late Bob Solodzuk), Burlington.

May had a full life enjoying annual trips to Florida, golfing, weekly “Club” meetings with her friends, square dancing with her beloved husband, playing bridge and preparing beautiful meals for her family. She loved being around people and entertaining.

In 1998, May and Rex said goodbye to their dear friends and family in Newfoundland and moved to Vineland, Ontario to be closer to their children.  May loved cruising around the windy roads through the vineyards in her 1996 bright red Golf Volkswagen! She was a regular parishioner at St. John’s Anglican Church in Jordan and a member of the Rockway Glen Golf Course.

May spent the last year and a half of her life at Linhaven Home. We wish to extend a special thank you to the staff on the Lincoln Unit for such compassionate and kind care.

There will be a private family gathering at Tallman’s Funeral Home in Vineland, ON on Thursday, Jan. 28 followed by a private service at St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Jordan.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either the Alzheimer Society, or St. John’s Anglican Church, Jordan.
