Obituary of Herbert Harder

Herbert Harder – November 9, 1937-March 22, 2021

Passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 22, 2021 at the age of 83, following a courageous struggle with cancer. He will be lovingly remembered by Hildegard, his wife of 52 years. Proud father of Douglas (Sherry), Sylvia (Richard) and Ryan (Jennifer). Cherished Opa to Meghan, Ethan, Katherine, Andrew, Matthew and Eric. Dear brother of Wilhelm (Hannelore), Renate (John) and many nieces and nephews. He is now reunited with his father Wilhelm, mother Frida and brother Helmut.

Herbert was born in the Free City of Danzig, and fled to West Germany with his brother where they were eventually reunited with their father. It was here that he developed a life-long interest in cars and all forms of motor vehicles. He emigrated with his family to Niagara and soon thereafter started his dream job of becoming an autobody apprentice.  He worked for Ford, a career he would have for over 50 years. He had a tireless work ethic and was known as “Beaver” by his work colleagues.  In 1968, he met the love of his life, Hildegard, and they were married later that same year. Family vacations were spent visiting relatives here in Canada and in Germany.   His early hobbies included building a model train set and restoring numerous cars including two convertibles. His later hobbies in retirement included documenting his family history and researching the bridges and border stones in Danzig.   He enjoyed nature and spent many hours working with Hildegard at their home and in the garden.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the TALLMAN FUNERAL HOME. Due to the current situation, the funeral attendance will be by invitation only. A celebration to commemorate Herbert’s life will be held at a later date.

As an expression of sympathy, donations to 100 Huntley Street-Crossroads (www.100huntley.com) would be greatly appreciated by the family.
