Obituary of Carl Franz Neumann

Neumann, Carl Franz

Passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours June 17, 2021 at UpperCanada Lodge in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. Nearly 96 years old, Carl led a long and active life including 70 years of marriage to his loving wife Hertha.

Carl was born August 3rd, 1925 on the Country Estate “Gut Falkenhorst”, Kreis Wehlau, Ostpreussen, Germany to Bruno and Margarete Martha (Holzlehner) Neumann.

Predeceased by his father Bruno, mother Margarete, wife Hertha (Schmidt), sister Ilse (Johannes von Dyck) in Germany and brother Kurt Neumann in Uruguay. Survived by his brother in law Rainer Schmidt (Roswitha) in Germany and sister in law Louise Neumann in Uruguay.

He will be greatly missed by his children Juan Ernesto (Darlene), Kaethe Ursula (Carmen), Dorothea van Ravenswaay (George), his grandchildren Ryan, Kurt (Ashley), Darren (Justina), Daisy (Alex) and his great-grandchildren Ava, Gavin, Hank, Tillie, Charlotte, Wilder, Clementine, and Otėjas.

Carl married his wife Hertha on April 6,1951 in Bremen, Germany. Shortly after in October 1951, the newlyweds  emigrated to Uruguay to start a new life and build a family. Carl first worked as a mason and then as a sharecropper on a large Estancia. After 4 years the couple managed to purchase a parcel of land in the newly founded Delta Mennonite Colony. There they built a state of the art modern dairy operation.

In 1969, faced with a deteriorating political climate, Carl sold the dairy farm they had established and moved with Hertha and their children to Canada. Settling in Niagara-on-the-Lake, they purchased a 70 acre vineyard on January 1, 1970. After only 9 years of growing grapes, Carl was selected by his peers as Grape King in 1979. He also served for many years on the Grower Committee of the Grape Growers of Ontario.

Throughout their marriage Carl and Hertha enjoyed many camping trips to Algonquin Park, their home among the vineyards, tending to their thriving gardens and hosting their many friends and especially children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr Viviers as well as the staff at UpperCanada Lodge for providing excellent care for Carl in his last years.

Private funeral celebrations will be held this June 23rd at Niagara Lakeshore Cemetery, Niagara-on-the-Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Diabetes Canada.
