Justina Bartel Obituary

Peacefully taken by the Lord, after a brief hospital stay, Justina Bartel was freed to meet with the Angels August 17, 2021. Born on Nov 2, 1925, Justina was predeceased by her husband Edmund Bartel in 1979, her parents Katherine Sawatzky in 1983 and Heinrich Sawatzky in 1938 along with her older brother Peter and sister Anna (2015). She is survived by her younger sister Agnes, 4 children, Karl (Viola), Annie, Rudy (Hannah), Peter (Jorey deceased) and various cousins.

Born in Karatal Siberia, Justina with her mother and 2 sisters made a harrowing journey across most of Europe to Canada to make a life in 1948. Inspired by her faith, love of family and the opportunity to work hard and thrive in Canada, Justina leaves an inspirational legacy to her 8 grandchildren, Shannon, Kevin, Yvonne, Rob, Elisha, Laura, Carrie, Neil, and 9 great grandchildren. Gifts of her handiwork and melt-in-your-mouth culinary delights were received and enjoyed at each traditional holiday and family gathering by young and old alike.

A devout member of the Niagara United Mennonite Church, and volunteer with the Benefit Shop and the Niagara Hospital as well as craft maker and donor to the MCC, Justina joyfully and tirelessly gave of herself.  Her hobbies included knitting, sewing, baking, crocheting, quilting, walking and volunteering.

Justina was a vital contributor to the Niagara on the Lake community as a farmer, housecleaner, canning factory employee and retired as a custodial worker in the NOTL Hospital.  She was known at the hospital as Jack of all trades, with the ability to do all kinds of things, including sewing drapes.

Justina managed a household, was the glue of an intergenerational family and worked for pay upon the early passing of her husband.  She will be remembered for her remarkable strength, generosity, and rich tapestry of abilities and traits.  She has touched and indelibly written on the souls of many.  We wish for her to deservedly rest in peace having crafted a remarkable life.

We will miss you, always love you and hold you in our hearts forever Jessie, Mom, Oma, Gross Oma, friend, neighbor, colleague.

The family of Justina extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Pleasant Manor, Creekview apartments, and to the staff and doctors at St. Catharines General Hospital, including Alex, Tim, Shelly and others, during Justina's final earthly days.  You are earth angels.

Cremation has taken place and a family graveside interment service will be held on Monday, August 23, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. at Niagara Lakeshore Cemetery.
