Obituary of Mary Matheson

MATHESON, Mary (nee Elton)

May 25, 1941 to December 13, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Matheson (nee Elton) on Monday December 13, 2021 at the age of 80. She will be greatly missed by her children; Catherine McLellan (Troy), Ian, Ross (Jennifer) and Paul along

with her Step-Grandchildren Dylan, Charlie, Rowan and Kaede. Predeceased by her husband of 51 years, John. She will be missed by her sister Jane Olvet (Sid) and brothers John Elton (Sharon) and Peter Elton (Valerie) along with her sisters-in-law Peggy Matheson, Janet McBride (Tom) and Vi Matheson along with many nieces and nephews and her good friend Helen Henderson.

Mary grew up in Long Branch, where her love of cards and sport began. She graduated from New Toronto Secondary School in 1959 then went on to complete Grade 13 at Neuchatel Junior College in Switzerland, where she ventured all over Europe and made many life-long friends. She then studied Mathematics, Physical Education and French at Trinity College, University of

Toronto graduating in 1964 from OISE. Mary began her teaching career in 1964 at Jarvis Collegiate (TDSB) and retired from education in 1999 at West Park Secondary School (DSBN). Mary volunteered with the Red Cross Society

becoming Branch President. She was a Beaver Leader (Sunny), coached baseball and soccer and taught Sunday School. In retirement, she volunteered at St. Andrew's Anglican Church and the Grimsby Public Art Gallery. She was a member of the Grimsby Garden Club, the Grimsby Tennis Club and the Historical Society. Mary was an avid tennis player, loved to play bridge with her friends and spend time in her garden. Mary loved to cook, bake and can (famous for her chopped

pickle). Her favorite Meal to host was Sunday Dinner and if you were fortunate enough to get invited you left with a full stomach and a full heart. Mary's family would like to thank the staff at the United Mennonite Home who took such good care of her while she struggled with Dementia.

The funeral service will be at St. Andrew's Anglican Church Grimsby on Saturday

December 18, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. We ask that anyone who plans to attend be fully

vaccinated and wear their mask at all times. In lieu of flowers donations can be

made to McNally House or the United Mennonite Home.
