Obituary of Reinhold Sawatzky

Reinhold Sawatzky
July 5, 1939 – February 4, 2022

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:1,2

Reinhold Sawatzky passed away peacefully in his home with family at his side.

He is predeceased by his first wife Leni (nee Enns) and by his sisters Anne Marie Wall and Waltraud Neufeld.

He leaves behind his beloved wife Erna of 20 years.

Dear father of Erhard, Holdine Siemens (Jon), Lorene Mandau (Rodney), Daniela Niessen, Terry Niessen (Leah).
Proud and loving grandpa of Lukas, Mike, Noah (Anna), Brent, Ryan, Josh, Taia and Jayden. Cherished Opa of Olivia, Hannah, Benjamin and Abigail, and great grandpa of Maria.

Reinhold was born on July 5, 1939, in the Mennonite Colony of Fernheim in Filadelphia, Paraguay to Peter & Justine Sawatzky. He was baptized as a youth into the Mennonite Brethren Church in Paraguay. He married Leni in October 1965. In March 1974 he emigrated to St. Catharines with his wife and their 3 young children. They became members of Scott Street MB Church. Together they served for many years as a deacon couple, on the kitchen committee and the welcoming committee. He loved singing and enjoyed being a part of the church choir.

He worked in construction, kitchen cabinetry and gardening. Shortly after the passing of Leni in January 2000 he retired.

In June 2001 he and Erna married, and God blessed them with a happy, loving marriage of 20 years.

In his retirement, he picked up a part time position working for the school board as a crossing guard. He did this for 19 years, until the end of this past year.

On February 4, 2022 he breathed his last breath in the same home that he helped build and raise his family.

Things that were important to Reinhold were his faith, his family, his church, and his garden. He took pleasure in listening to music and Christian programs on the radio, reading, being outdoors and spending time with family.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at Scott St. MB Church (339 Scott St, St. Catharines, ON L2N 1J7)  at 11:00am with an hour of visitation ahead of time at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, 432 Queenston St., St. Catharines.
