George Wichert passed away Sunday, February 13, at Pleasant Manor in Virgil. He was 94 years old. George was born in April 1927 in Kitchener, Ontario, to Henry and Elisabeth (Funk) Wichert, who had immigrated to Canada from Russia the previous year with their 3 eldest children. George was the first of five children born in Canada. Except for Margaret, who died at age 2, the rest all remained in and around Virgil, and in time the 7 siblings, 6 spouses, and 23 children formed a large and close-knit family clan. In 1935 George’s parents bought land in Niagara-on-the-Lake, building a house and establishing a farm on Niven Rd. This is where he grew up and developed his love of farming. George’s schooling was interrupted by WWII. With his 2 older brothers away doing alternative service, he had to work to support the family. After the war ended, he went back to finish high school at the newly formed Eden Christian College (now Eden High School), which at the time was located in Niagara-on-the-Lake. He was the first in his family both to finish high school and to go on to university. He attended Waterloo College of Arts (later renamed Waterloo Lutheran University, and eventually Wilfred Laurier University), followed by a year of teacher’s college in Toronto, and then started his career as a high school teacher. In 1954 George married Bertha Dick, a young woman he had met in the Virgil Church youth group, who had recently graduated from nursing school. After a year of teaching in Ingersoll, Ontario, he was invited to return to Virgil and teach at Eden, thus beginning his 32-year career at the school, including 12 years as principal. George and Bertha moved back to Virgil, bought a property on Henry St. (at the time only a dirt track, with electricity, but no running water), and George began building a house, while starting a new teaching position at Eden. In December their first son, David, was born. While Bertha was in the hospital giving birth, George spent his Christmas holiday installing a furnace so there would be heat when Bertha and Dave came home. Gradually, in the coming years, the house was finished, and the family welcomed 4 more children: Nancy, Timothy, Geoffrey and Suzanne. In 1970 the family moved across Virgil, to a new house on Line 1, where they began farming 5 acres of land that Bertha’s father had passed on to his children. The cherry and peach orchards here became another defining feature of the family, blending the rhythm of pruning, tending and harvesting with the cycles of the school year. A few weeks each summer spent at Elim Lodge, in the Kawartha Lakes, were a welcome reprieve. In 1978, eldest son Dave was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident while travelling with friends (including his brother, Tim) in Nova Scotia. George had been ordained as a minister in 1964, and after his retirement from teaching in 1987 he and Bertha spent several years doing pastoral ministry in Mennonite churches, first in Germany and then back in Virgil. Bertha died of cancer in 1997, after nearly 43 years of marriage, and the following year George married Linda Willms, with whom he would spend the remaining 24 years of his life. Beginning in 2000, George and Linda also spent 9 years doing ministry with seniors at Cornerstone Community Church. George has always loved to travel. In addition to regular family camping trips, he and Bertha did major excursions to Europe, India, and Africa. Together with Linda he travelled to Europe, Israel, Alaska, UK, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. In between these major excursions, Ontario canal cruises and several US locations (Pennsylvania, Myrtle Beach, Florida) were favourite destinations, as well as trips to Winnipeg, MB and Kelowna, BC, to visit children and grandchildren there. It was fitting, then, that we celebrated his 90th birthday with a Caribbean cruise including all 4 children and their partners. George is survived by his wife, Linda, children Nancy (Tye) Gamey, Tim Wichert (Debra Simpson), Geoff (Audrey) Wichert, and Suzanne (Andre) Gardzella, 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, brother Walt and sister Marian. He is predeceased by his first wife, Bertha, eldest son Dave, brothers Henry, John and Jake, and sisters Margaret and Louise. All Provincial COVID Protocols will be in place including the wearing of masks at all times. The funeral will take place Tuesday, February 22, 11:00am at Cornerstone Community Church, 434 Hunter Rd., Niagara-on-the-Lake, with visitation an hour before the service starting at 10:00am. The service will be livestreamed at https://cornerstonenotl.online.church/, and available subsequently on the church’s YouTube channel. Burial at Niagara Lakeshore Cemetery will happen immediately following the service. There will also be visitation at the church on Monday, February 21, from 5:00-7:00pm Memorial donations may be made to the Eden High School Spiritual Life Centre (www.slceden.com/donation) or Camp Crossroads (www.campcrossroads.com/give/) If you have stories, memories or pictures of George you’d like to share, the family would be very grateful if you could place them on the tribute wall at Tallman Funeral Homes, or contact a member of the family directly.

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
