Obituary of Mike Jones

Jones, William Michael ‘Mike’ CA, CPA (retired) 1955-2023
On January 6th, 2023, Mike passed away after tenaciously challenging glioblastoma for 16 months. Beloved husband of Anne Andres-Jones for almost 44 years, or to quote Mike, “all my life.” Proud father of Ryan and Amy Jones, Andrea Jones and Brad Beattie, Evan Jones and Kristy Engeland, and Eryn and Sarah Jones. Loving Papa to Mia, Macy, Mikey, Aria and Hazel. Mike will be sadly missed by his parent-in-laws, Ed and Lois Andres, his siblings MaryAnn Enns, Dave and Karen Jones, Tim and Julie Jones; his brother and sister-in-laws Susan and John Vriens, Cathy Andres and Rob MacLachlan; his nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was predeceased by his parents William (Buck) and Anne Jones, and his grandparents Arnold and Nita Smith, and William and Florence Jones. Mike was a loyal, generous, and strong-willed family member and friend. He enjoyed our trips, dinners out, cottage weekends as well as his Friday lunches and sports trips. The children and Anne will always be grateful for the kindness and support shown to us by family and friends, especially in the time since Mike’s diagnosis. After gaining business experience in a number of roles, Mike became a partner in English and Jones, now Jones & O’Connell LLP Chartered Professional Accountants. His prodigious work ethic as well as his commitment to excellence and his clients was rewarded by his clients’ loyalty and in many cases friendship. He was proud that the company created jobs in Niagara. Mike enjoyed all sport as a young player, a coach and a fan - he believed it to play an important role for children and youth. He was happy watching a professional game or sitting in a local arena watching lacrosse or kids’ hockey. He had an amazing memory capacity for sport trivia and could talk or argue about almost any sport, but his real passion was for box lacrosse. He was proud to be awarded “The Spirit of Lacrosse” print for 40 years of service to the Ontario Lacrosse Association.
Our heartfelt thanks to the medical teams at the Odette Cancer Centre of Sunnybrook Hospital for the excellent medical treatment, to the physiotherapy team at WIN health, and to the staff and volunteers at Niagara Hospice for their loving care and compassion.
At Mike’s insistence cremation has taken place, there will be no funeral or visitation. A gathering for family and friends to share their memories and stories will be held at a later date. If you wish to honour Mike’s life please contribute in some way to children’s or youth sport in your local community. If you prefer, donations can be made in Mike’s memory to the Sunnybrook Foundation (designated for Glioblastoma Research), or to Hospice Niagara.
