Betty Smith

October 18, 1927 – January 21, 2023

 

Betty Louise Smith passed away peacefully on January 21, 2023 at Pinewood Court in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Betty was born October 18, 1927 in Campden, Ontario. Her parents were William and Ella Mae Blain, and she was the youngest of eight children. She graduated from Beamsville District Secondary School in 1945. Betty married Cyril Smith on November 18, 1945 and they spent 59 year together. After her husband’s time serving in the US Army, they lived in Buffalo, New York for a few years. Eventually, they returned to Canada and settled in Beamsville, Ontario. Betty raised her three children and supported her husband in his electrical contracting business; Cyril B. Smith Electric.

In April 2017, Betty moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario to be closer to her son Robert.

Betty enjoyed sewing and knitting and was very talented at needlepoint. She loved maintaining her home and driving her car.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, her four brothers and three sisters. Her oldest brother, William Blain died in the Second World War serving the Canadian Armed Forces. She was also predeceased by her daughter Karen (1990), her husband Cyril (2005), and her grandson Nathan (2015).

She is survived by her sons Michael and his wife Sandra and the Rev. Robert Smith; her granddaughter Courtney Hickleton and her husband Aiden, and her great-grandsons Remy and Aston Hickleton.

Funeral Services will be held at TALLMAN FUNERAL HOME, 3277 King St. Vineland, Ontario on Friday February 10, 2023 at 1:00pm, officiated by the Rev. Ian Chadwick. She will be buried beside her husband and her daughter at St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery in Jordan, Ontario.

There will be an informal gathering to celebrate Betty’s life at St. Paul’s United Church in Thunder Bay on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 2:00 pm, officiated by the Rev. Desire Tiriwepi.

In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial donations to St. Alban’s Anglican Church in Beamsville, Ontario or the Salvation Army in St. Catharines, Ontario or West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby, Ontario.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the EVEREST - WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, Thunder Bay.
