Thomas Kopeschny

Obituary of Thomas David Kopeschny

Thomas David Kopeschny passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at the age of 31 in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.

Thomas is survived by his parents Fred and Deb Kopeschny, sister Laura Ivitza and husband Albert, nephew Nathaniel, girlfriend Heart Salimbangon, Oma Hedy Kopeschny, Aunt and Uncle Christine and Hans Pauls and Uncle Geoff Douglas. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was predeceased by his Opa David Kopeschny, grandparents Robert and Marian Douglas and Uncle Rob Douglas.

Thomas was born in Scarborough on October 2, 1992, to Fred and Deb Kopeschny.

Thomas loved the outdoors, canoeing, fishing, sitting by a campfire, skateboarding and even riding a unicycle given to him by his grandpa. He played hockey as a youngster and wasn't afraid to take on the biggest guy from the opposing team. He loved music and playing his guitar. He enjoyed a good walk in the ravine and in the park and adored our family dog Sadie.

After high school, Thomas went on to earn a Diploma in Social Service Work from Sir Sandford Fleming college in Peterborough, Ontario. He worked as a personal support worker, in various homeless shelters and most recently at Homes First, as intensive case manager and shelter worker. He loved his job and loved to help others through difficult times. He had heaps of compassion that he shared freely, a loving soul. Thomas could be silly, daring and loved a good conversation expressing his unique view of the world.

Thomas suffered from mental health issues since his teens and sometimes made understanding his perspective difficult for us. This did, however, give him a special ability to empathize and care for others.

We are thankful that in the last year he became close to his loving girlfriend, Heart, and spent as much time with her as he could.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Toronto United Mennonite Church, 1774 Queen St. East at 11:00am, November 4, 2023. Reception and sharing to follow.
