Obituary of Karel Vahrmeyer

VAHRMEYER, Karel Johannes - Surrounded by family, Karel passed away at home in St. Catharines on Sunday, November 30, 2014. After a short battle with leukemia he died peacefully in his sleep. Karel leaves behind his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, Nettie Vahrmeyer (nee Zylstra). He was the loving father of Marina (Harry) Dykstra, Diane (Shawn) Sikkema, Karl (Wilma), Joyce (Ramon) Yance, Andrew (Eilana), Ron (Melody), and Bobby (Leah). He was Opa to twenty-nine grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Each of them held a special place in his heart. Karel's steadfast faith in a Sovereign God and his love of family are an example to future generations. Karel is survived by his siblings Mien (Cor) Plugers, Bob (Betty), Joop (Kor) VanBrakel, Riet Schouten, Thys (Tina), Bill (Tina), and Ron (Audrey). He was brother-in-law to Marie (Bill) Hartman, Joanne VanHuis, Tom (Lina), Andrew, Agnes (Bill) Smit, and Mark (Corrie). He was uncle to many nieces and nephews. Karel is predeceased by brothers-in-law Cecil Zylstra, Dick Schouten, Dick VanHuis, and sister-in-law Edith Zylstra. He was also predeceased by great-grandsons Tig Wallace and Noah Gasparro. Karel lived an active lifestyle. He enjoyed swimming at the local YMCA and walking at the Port Dalhousie pier. Karel worked in the produce department at Loblaws for forty-four years, until his retirement in 1997. The family would like to thank Dr. Buetow, Dr. Leonard, Dr. Harlock, CCAC, VON, Care Partners, St. Elizabeth, Carma and Dr. Proctor (Hospice Niagara). Special thanks to Marek, George and Tammy for their kindness, care and support. Visitation will be held at Trinity United Reformed Church, 99 Scott Street,St. Catharines, ON on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral Service will take place on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made to Heritage Christian School in Jordan, Beacon Christian School in St. Catharines, or a Christian School of your choice.
