Paul van Dongen

Obituary of Paul van Dongen

van Dongen, H. Paul A. On December 15, 2015, in his 89th year, Paul died peacefully at NHS St. Catharines after a long illness and with family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Edith (née Harder) for 50 years, father of three sons: Paul and Alexandra, Christopher and Carmen, Michael and Sheryl; and loving grandfather to Hannah, Emerson, Alec, Rowan and Graham. He is also survived by sister Hélène Thomson, niece Karen Mepham and the extended van Dongen and Harder families. Born in Berchem, Antwerpen, Belgium, Paul immigrated to Canada in 1952 and left his mark as a music teacher, musician, conductor, pioneer and mentor. He launched the school board’s instrumental music program, founded and conducted the youth orchestra and played in the symphony for more than 50 years. With his warmth, wit and wisdom, he gave thousands of people the gift of music, inspiring many to choose it as their path. He no doubt heard many wrong notes, but he much preferred remembering the right ones. After retiring in 1989 Paul found much pleasure in conducting Mercredi Musique Chamber Orchestra, travelling, woodworking and making music with his family. Paul's family is grateful for the exceptional care from Dr. R. Boily, Dr. B. Leonard and the staff at the Walker Family Cancer Centre. The family will hold a private funeral. Visitation will take place at Tallman Funeral Homes, 3277 King St, Vineland, on Monday, December 21 from 2–4 and 7–9 p.m. A musical celebration of Paul’s life will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Niagara Youth Orchestra or the Walker Family Cancer Centre.
