Helen Loewen

Obituary of Helen Loewen

Helen passed away in St. Catharines Hospital on Thursday October 3, 2019, at the age 0f 89 years; she was born August 15 1930 in Choritza, Ukraine to Jakob and Mathilda (Harder) Neufeld. She was one of six siblings.

Helen often spoke of the wonderful times she had growing up with her brothers and sisters and of how her mother made each child feel loved and special. Her childhood was marked by WW2 and the loss of her father as he was taken to Siberia where he died. This is something she never got over.

Helen emigrated to Canada during the war through England , lived in B.C. for a short time and then moved to Manitoba, finally settling in St. Catharines. Here she was baptized and met her first husband David Braun, who passed away after only 5 years of marriage.  Several years later Helen met Henry Loewen and they married in 1965. Henry and Helen settled in Niagara on the lake where they had their only child, Rina.

In 1988 Rina married Henry and mom said "she finally had a son". In 1996 Helen was overjoyed when her only grandchild Autumn was born. Autumn and Helen had a special bond and loved each other fiercely. Last summer when Autumn married Sean, mom said "now I have a grandson".Helen loved Sean very much.

Later in life after several moves, Henry and Helen settled in Tabor Manor.Henry passed away in 2011 and Helen continued to live on her own at Tabor.

Helen did not always have an easy life but she relied on God and her strong faith to guide her through her toughest times, even during her last few days in the hospital she talked of how good her God was.

Helen had a big heart, a terrific sense of humor, a great sense of style, she was an excellent cook, a hard worker and avid game player and loved singing with her beautiful soprano voice.

Helen is missed by her children Rina and Henry Heyde, her grandchildren Autumn and Sean Krol, many nieces and nephews  and brother and sister in laws and her nieces Susan Mcvean, Viola Knudson and Anne Stoesz, who mom often referred to as her " first set of daughters".

We would also like to give a special thank you to Peter and Betty Loewen who brought so much joy into moms l later life by their acts of kindness.
