Helen Unger

Obituary of Helen Unger

UNGER, Helen

We mourn the passing of our mother Helen Unger (Rempel) on Monday, January 22, 2024, at home in her 90th year after a lengthy illness.

Predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Ernst, in 2008, her father and stepmother Jakob and Katharina Rempel, and her sisters Margaret and Elisabeth. She will be greatly missed by her children Gerda (Yvon) Garneau, Ingrid (Mitch) Gunson, Werner (Karen), Margaret, and Elizabeth (Ken) Baigent, her grandchildren Amanda (Colin), Christina, David, and Jakob, and great-grandson Alexander.

Helen immigrated to Canada with her stepmother and sisters in 1957, marrying a widower with three small children in 1966 and then had two more children together.  In addition to working as a Nurse’s Aide at the United Mennonite Home, Helen and Ernie enjoyed working in the garden on their small farm, raising animals, keeping bees, and hosting amazing family gatherings. She was an outstanding gardener, baker, and seamstress. Helen was an avid reader, enjoyed deep conversations, had an immense thirst for learning, and always looked forward to her weekly volunteer time with the MCC.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the many PSWs, Care Workers, and Nurses, who attended to her over the past year. Extreme heartfelt appreciation goes out to Dr. Volz whose care, compassion, and attentiveness was a tremendous blessing to both Helen and her family.

The family will honour her life with a brief visitation at Tallman Funeral Home, 3277 King Street, Vineland on Friday, January 26th, 2024, from 11-12 p.m. followed directly by a funeral service in the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mennonite Central Committee would be greatly appreciated.
