As occasionally happens, I was reading a story online and a name from my past randomly popped into my head.....Robert Hesp.
I last ran into Robert in Bordon, Ontario in 1991 as he was just about to, or just had, released from the Canadian Forces. I trained as an Infantry Officer with Robert, both at the language school in St Jean, Quebec and for the real army training, in Gagetown, NB. As I recall, Robert was running for election as a member of the Reform Party. As a strong supporter of the movement back then, my last conversation with Robert was passionate about all that was wrong with Canadian politics (little could we have imagined how bad it would get!)
Anyhow, I have one story to share. It was the winter of 1987, and it was a cold Friday morning in Gagetown. As was the tradition on some Thursday nights, the boys had ventured into Fredericton for a few beers at 'The Cos'. The problem was, morning PT didn't care what you had done the night before, it was going ahead regardless. We would always run in platoon formation, 3 abreast. This particular morning, I was right behind Robert. As we started the run, it became apparent that some of us weren't doing so well....but to fall out of the run was unthinkable. Anyhow, halfway through the run, Robert threw up....in formation whilst running. He didn't break stride, just spewed once, maybe twice, and carried on as if nothing had happened.
As Robert wasn't necessarily the most athletic of us, his perseverance on that run, despite a solid hangover, earned lots of respect from his course mates.....and of course, we all had a good laugh.

This is such a tremendous loss. Rob and I were roommates for a junket to Washington, D.C. when we attended Wheaton College. We decided to take a jog in a rainstorm and tripped on steel cables next to the Lincoln Memorial. We went sliding in the grass for quite some time. After re-connecting at the 30 year reunion we engaged via social media. We had terrific chat discussions. I am a Ph.D. in political science and a professor at Cal. State, and I considered Rob an important asset for policy issues. You have my deepest condolences and I share your sorrow.

My deepest sympathies to all the many family and friends of Rob Hesp. I was lucky to have Rob as a friend for almost 40 years. He taught me what true friendship looks like, and being with him was always fun and engaging. He taught me to ski, he gave me golf tips, he challenged me to take on greater challenges, he gave me investment advice, and he gave me a different perspective on the world. He loved his family and loved talking about what each person was up to. I will miss him dearly and always remember him with great fondness.

I especially loved going to Sabres games with him; he had totally mastered the perfect route to get there, the best place to park, and where to get the best wings. I'm afraid my memory is a small one, but I think it's representative of a lot of experiences. Rob was a prominent member of Fairview Church when I was just a small kid there. His daughter, Natasha and I were around the same age.
Going to church I was shy and often intimidated by the sea of unknown faces. I often got lost in the crowd somewhere between the mailboxes and refreshment table. There were a few people that I would consider "anchor" people - who made me feel safe and I could ask for help to find my way back to my parents. Rob and Sandy were those "anchor" people in the church - always a welcoming, safe, and compassionate member of the community. Rob was also friends with my parents, and I know they happily did business with him for a long time. I'll miss that friendly, familiar face - part of one of the few families that made me feel safe enough to emerge from hiding behind my mom's leg.
My condolences to the Hesp family. From the youngest of the Kish family, Rob will certainly be missed.
